Over 1 million tons of plastic film and sheet was imported into the United States in 2016. Imports were up 10% through July 2017. Film and sheet from polyethylene, PET and polypropylene were the largest volume imports, followed by PVC, polystyrene and polycarbonates.
Polyethylene film and sheet imports totaled 373,000 tons in 2016, imported primarily from Canada, with much smaller volumes from China, Israel, Mexico and others.
Polypropylene film and sheet imports, 236,000 tons, and polystyrene imports, 38,000 tons, were mainly from Mexico and Canada.
Oman was the US’s largest supplier of PET film and sheet, followed by Mexico, Canada, Bahrain and Korea. Total volume imported last year was 288,000 tons.
China and Taiwan were top sources for PVC film and sheet; Israel for polycarbonates film and sheet. Total volumes imported were 68,000 tons and 15,000 tons, respectively.
